[Interview] Sir Ridley Scott On Technology, Prequels And How 'Alien: Paradise' Became 'Prometheus'

Obama -xI’ve seen Ridley Scott’s Prometheus twice now and I like it quite a bit. It’s not without its issues, but I think it’s an interesting, inquisitive and intense movie that’s full of questions (if not so many answers).


Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Scott a few days ago in London to talk about the journey of Prometheus to the screen. We also touch on a question a lot of people are asking, “why does the technology in this film look different than in ‘Alien’?” Scott also discussed his original plans for the film (back when it was titled Alien: Paradise).

“With ‘Prometheus,’ Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”

'Pit of Bones' Yields Oldest Known Human DNA

Researchers have uncovered a new clue about human origins after discovering the oldest known human DNA in a legendary Spanish archeological site called Sima de los Huesos or the Pit of Bones.Researchers were able to extract DNA from a leg bone that was estimated to be 400,000 years old.After extracting the DNA from a femur bone, Matthias Meyer, who published his findings in a study in the
journal Nature was able to replicate the entire genome for the ancient human relative.

The genetic sequence surprised researchers who thought it was likely that the sequence would reveal that remains were related to the Neanderthals. Instead the genetic sequence revealed that this early human species is related to another genetic cousin of modern humans,the mysterious Denisovans.
Little is known about the Denisovans who are thought to have been common throughout the regions now known as Asia and Eastern Europe.This early human species was discovered after genetic sequencing was used to map DNA through the ancient pinkie bone of a girl in 2010.
Anthropologists and genetic experts said the findings from the Pit of Bones could help shed light on how early human species evolved and spread across different continents.
This places what we have to assume from the genetic sequence is an earlier branch of our family that goes back even further in time said Kenneth Kidd, professor of genetics at the Yale University School of Medicine.Kidd said since the DNA was from 400,000 years ago this mysterious human relative likely predated most Neanderthals.Kidd explained that one reason there is little known about the Denisovans is that the Neanderthals may have annihilated the Denisovans similar to how the Neanderthals died off as modern humans became more populous.If you're wondering if you're related to the ancient DNA, Kidd said there is no evidence that the Denisovans provided any genetic material for the modern human race.
Theodore Schurr, professor of anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, said the findings were significant since it showed clearly how DNA mapping was changing the field of anthropology. Schurr said solely from the skeletal remains researchers thought the human species appeared to be related to Neanderthals.This is also significant because it's the DNA coming from the oldest remains said Schurr. "It's interesting to compare the skeletons to the genetics because the stories may not match up.

Truck Carrying 'Extremely Dangerous' Radioactive Material Stolen in Mexico

A truck carrying extremely dangerous material used in medical treatment has been stolen in Mexico officials said.The truck was transporting cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive
waste storage facility when it was stolen in Tepojaco near Mexico City Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive isotope and was being used in radiotherapy.
Mexican authorities are conducting a search for the material and have issued a statement to alert the public, the IAEA said.The truck is a white Volkswagen Worker with license plate 726-DT-8, Mexico's National Commission for Nuclear Security and Safeguards said.At the time the truck was stolen, the source was properly shielded. However, the source could be extremely dangerous to a person if removed from the shielding, or if it was damaged the IAEA said in the statement.There was no indication from officials that the truck was headed for the U.S.U.S. law enforcement and Department of Homeland Security officials are aware of the theft and working closely with Mexican authorities, a U.S. official briefed on the situation told ABC News.Border officials armed with radiation detection devices have been alerted. It is unclear who stole the material and if they know what they have, the official said.

SpaceX’s latest rocket launch a success after recent setbacks

SpaceX added another historic mission to its resume with the successful launch of its Falcon 9 rocket with a $100 million SES-8 satellite in tow.This was the seventh official launch in the Falcon 9 series and takes SpaceX, run by founder Elon Musk, one step closer to its ultimate goal of transporting humans into space by 2017.The successful launch came from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday afternoon came after two previous
attempts were cancelled in recent weeks.
The entry of SpaceX into the commercial market is a game-changer SES chief technology officer Martin Halliwell said in a recent teleconference.It's going to really shake the industry to its roots.SpaceX has said the goal of the launch is to take a payload to a predetermined geostationary location 50,000 miles above the Earth’s surface. The 224.4 foot tall rocket can be used to carry cargo payloads or SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft into orbit .Meeting this national priority for an American human space transportation capability is paramount for SpaceX and we are very focused on this for our NASA customer reads an explanation on the company’s site.And having NASA as a paying customer surely is one of SpaceX's most public accomplishments.So how much does it cost to launch your own private payload into space? About $56.5 million, according to SpaceX’s price index listed on its site.And that's part of SpaceX's commercial appeal beating comparable offers from Russia ($100 million) and European ventures ($200 million) according to the Houston Chronicle.Although heavier payloads can run the cost up to $135 million.

With spell check and automatic technology, simple knowledge and calculations are done for most people. While this does save time and effort, it causes many individuals to become dependent on technology, which can be problematic in situations without modern advancement.
Behavioral Problems
Because of the amount of time children spend watching television, views and behaviors are affected. One example is evidenced in a study by researchers at the University of Michigan that spanned 15 years. It found a link between childhood television viewing and adult violent behavior. Other studies found links between TV viewing and smoking, drinking and risky sexual behavior.
